Hello, I am Evilyn13, a Vancouver cosplayer and model who specializes in alternative and retro fashion – I am also a DJ, who has begun live-streaming on Twitch since the clubs have closed due to covid. You can catch our streams at twitch.tv/restrictedentertainment and more about me at www.evilyn13.com

How many tattoos do you have? And with one is your favorite one?

I have about seven tattoos, but I can’t pick a favorite, haha! I just got a jack-o-lantern with a witch hat on my arm, so I guess it is my most recent tattoo means it is my current favorite if I had to pick.

How do you get started with fashion modeling?  Why cosplay?

I started modeling years ago when I was asked by friends and local designers why I wasn’t modeling. It was definitely a combination of peer pressure and the love of fashion that got me started. It has been a really fun way to exercise the creative side of my brain. I started cosplaying after attending my first comic convention in Vancouver. I have always been a big fan of Halloween, so when I realized that you could dress up at comic conventions I was hooked. It is so much fun to get in character and be someone else for a day, I mean, who doesn’t want to be Batman for a day?

For how long have you been in cosplay?

I have been cosplaying for about seven years now and have had some amazing opportunities to visit some cool places as a cosplay guest that I am so grateful for, like El Salvador, Mexico City, Dallas, and Boston.

Cosplay is a time-consuming hobby. how long does it take to craft your costumes?

To be honest, I don’t make most of my costumes, I commission them from people who are already experts at what they do. Between DJing, modeling, and working a “normal” full-time job I don’t have a lot of free time to learn how to craft, so I find it easier to support other people in the arts community by purchasing costumes and props from them. Then I get to help promote their work in my photos and hopefully they get more followers and clients in the future from that.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

Hmmm… I guess I am just proud that I have so many people who have supported me from the very beginning when I didn’t really believe in myself. I never thought I would be traveling the world to do something so much fun, and that I would meet so many amazing people along the way. If you had asked me ten years ago where I saw myself in the future, I don’t think I would have guessed I’d be a model and a cosplayer. So I guess I am proud that other people are enjoying my work and it makes them happy.

What inspires you?

Everything! I see the beauty in so many things that it’s hard not to be inspired all the time. I think part of that is my attraction to all things dark and macabre. I feel like I see the beauty in darkness and pain, instead of gloom and sorrow.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that the Internet doesn’t know about you yet?

To be honest, I don’t think I am a particularly interesting person haha! I am actually an introvert and being in quarantine this year has really taught me a lot about what makes me happy and how important it is to me to help others feel happy when they might be silently struggling. Being an introvert, I already feel overly exposed on the internet, so I feel like I have shared so much of myself in my art expression already,  that I have nothing left to hide. But one interesting fact is that I still get nervous before every single DJ set I play, even though I have been doing it for over ten years.

What is your goal for 2021?

To do more cosplays! I traveled so much during 2019 that I didn’t have time to put together very many costumes or do any photoshoots, and well, 2020 has been a bit of a dumpster fire, but I have been slowly trying to get motivated to create more cosplay content, so hopefully, I have will have more new cosplay content soon!
